------ A Brief History: ------

In the early 17th century the islands were taken over by British, French and Dutch Pirates who used them as a base to raid Spanish cargo vessels laden with gold and other treasures from the new world. Captain Henry Morgan had his base on Roatan along with 5000 other buccaneers. The pirates also raided the mainland which provoked a retaliatory attack on the islands by the Spanish who finally routed the brigands in 1782. Once again the islands became uninhabited. In 1797 the British landed with 4000 slaves from St. Vincent. These people gradually made their way on to the mainland and were the ancestors of the colourful Garifuna villagers who live along the mainland Caribbean coast of Honduras today. The islands rested in British hands until 1859 when they were ceded to Honduras. English, spoken with a broad Caribbean accent, remains the preferred language of the islanders.
